The ‘casa grotta’ is the typical home of the Sassi carved out of the rock. It represents an excellent example to be able to know and understand the evolution of Matera’s history and peasant culture, and is suitable for being an excellent teaching tool for school groups. The casagrotta del Casalnuovo is made up of 4 rooms excavated on three levels, with attached stable and cellar. Next to the casagrotta there is the “sound ceramic” laboratory where you can admire the display of terracotta whistles, typical of the area, made entirely by hand. The structure offers audio explanation in Italian, French, German, English, Spanish and Japanese. Guided tours can be booked for the Casalnuovo cave house.
To better understand the customs and habits of the inhabitants of the ancient districts of the Sassi di Matera, before leaving them, we invite you to visit the Cave House of Vico Solitario in the Sasso Caveoso, near the Church of San Pietro Caveoso.
