From the Tyrrhenian coast
Merge onto the Salerno – Reggio Calabria motorway. Follow the indications for Potenza. Then continue for Metaponto along the SS 407 “Basentana” until the signs for Matera near Ferrandina Scalo.
From the Adriatic coast
Take the Bologna-Taranto highway to the Bari Nord exit. Continue for the industrial area, for Altamura-Matera, that is the SS 96 and then the SS 99, to be modernized.
From Calabria and Sicily
Reggio Calabria-Salerno highway. Exit at Sibari and take the SS 106 Jonica to Taranto. Take the Matera exit, near Metaponto.
From Salento
The most convenient way is to pass Taranto and take the SS 106 Jonica to the Matera exit near Metaponto.
New connections are active with the city of Matera for Salerno Central Station. Matera is connected to Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains direct throughout Northern Italy thanks to the new services called Freccialink and Italobus. Travelers can use both the train and the bus with a single ticket.
The closest airport is Bari Palese, just 60 km away from the city of the Sassi. Pugliairbus is the land transport service with shuttle bus that connects Matera to this airport.
